Shelter is usually put at the top of the Sacred Order of Survival making it an absolutely essential skill for outdoors-people. Learning to build simple debris huts and wickiups as well as more elaborate hogans and scout pits is a fantastic way to empower yourself while building connection to place. The shelter that is literally the closest to us is our clothing. Outfitting yourself with the right gear as well as making your own gear is a critical Survival Skill.

This course will cover hands-on instruction and construction of:

Debris Hut

  • Wikiup
  • Scout Pit
  • Hogan

Additionally, we will cover optimal natural and synthetic clothing choices as well as hands-on instruction in the traditional Native American technique of brain tanned deer hide. Brain tanned deer clothing is naturally camouflaged, windproof, silent in motion, warm, comfortable and lasts for decades. Participants will get to experience first hand why animal skin has been the clothing of choice for millennia.

This is a hands-on class, come prepared to have fun and get dirty.
